The Mean House

It is a concept in Ecology which describes that the natural systems are in a state of equilibrium. In artificial space, when people separate the space into small scale, the balance might be broken. When I first visited Horrocks House, I felt that the interior space was excessively separated; some parts were too bright and warm, and some were gloomy and cold.

The designing objective of the MEAN house is to rebalance the natural elements, the Air, Humanity, and Lighting by reorganizing the spaces; also try to make the lowest impact on the original house. The spatial design was considered horizontally and vertically, involving the philosophy “Doctrine of the Mean” to create a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere and keep users neutral.
